Simon Alexander
Principal Software Engineer
Simon Alexander joined Microsoft and the Applied Sciences Group (ASG) as a principal software engineer in 2024.
Before joining ASG, he had a range of technical and leadership roles in several medical device startups, where he built algorithms, systems, and R&D teams. Much of this work focused in and around medical imaging, computer vision, and ML/AI applications, but also ran the gamut from low-level control systems to user interfaces.
These technical areas are a natural outgrowth of his interests as a research mathematician, working primarily in functional analysis with applications to medical imaging and signal processing. While those remain areas of interest, over time and shipping multiple devices he became equally interested in end-user experience and interface constraints; and how they can limit or facilitate the impact of technology.
Simon holds a joint honors B.Sc. in physics and mathematics from the University of Victoria, and both MMA and Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Waterloo. After those studies he held an NSERC post-doctoral fellowship in Houston, Texas, where he collaborated with doctors and researchers in the medical center, including M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas Heart Institute.
In his free time, Simon enjoys walking, and life on two wheels—both pedaled and powered.
