Rui Wang is a senior research scientist in Microsoft’s Applied Science Group.

He joined Microsoft in 2021 as a member of the Microsoft Spatial AI Lab Zurich, focusing on spatial perception and reasoning, including large-scale cloud mapping, map-based localization and 3D scene understanding.

Before Microsoft, he pursued his Ph.D. in the Computer Vision Group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where he researched visual odometry and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM); enhancing them with deep learning.  During this time he worked at Artisense, a startup co-founded by his Ph.D. advisor.  Rui holds a master’s degree from TUM and a bachelor’s degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Beyond work, Rui is passionate about visual arts, including drawing, Chinese calligraphy, and photography.  He also enjoys the outdoors, spending his time cycling, running, hiking, and mountaineering.
