Mihai is a senior software engineer in Microsoft’s Applied Science Group.  His fields of interest include multimodal models, image and video understanding, scene reconstruction, and higher-level spatial understanding and reasoning.

Mihai joined Microsoft in 2023 as part of the Mixed Reality and A.I. Lab working on the next generation of cloud-based mapping, localization, and spatial understanding technology.  As part of this team, Mihai worked on improving the performance as well as enabling new experiences through engineering contributions across the whole stack (C++, Python, TypeScript) and by integrating state-of-the-art technologies into the pipeline.

Before this, Mihai obtained his Ph.D. at ETH Zurich as part of the Computer Vision and Geometry (CVG) group under the supervision of Dr. Marc Pollefeys and Dr. Johannes Schönberger.  His research focussed on deep learning applied to computer vision, notably for feature detection and description and image matching in the context of visual localization and mapping pipelines.

Outside of work, you can find Mihai enjoying many outdoor activities including running, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, or indoors at the pool and gym, playing video or board games, and reading books.
