Jiandong Huang has a strong curiosity to understand the interactions between photons and materials and structures and has been trying to use this understanding to solve everyday challenges by creating better displays, faster optical transmissions, more efficient solar cells, and highly effective optical imaging and sensing systems.

Before joining Microsoft, he did research related to optics and photonics on such various topics as displays, green energy (solar cells and solar water splitting), fiberoptics, silicon photonics, and bioimaging, and more for labs at Sharp Laboratories of America, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and JDS Uniphase Corp.

Jiandong received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed-matter physics focusing on organic light emitting materials and photonic crystals from Prof. Vardeny’s group (one of the pioneering groups in OLED) at the University of Utah.  He also holds a master’s degree in optics and a bachelor’s degree in applied physics, both from Shanghai Jiaotong University in China.

He enjoys sports and likes to play basketball, table tennis, badminton, and tennis, among others.  He has two children.
